Have you ever wondered about the internal voices that echo within you? What purpose do they serve? At times, these voices can uplift us, urging us to take risks and embrace our potential. They remind us of our courage and capabilities, motivating us to pursue opportunities we might otherwise shy away from.
However, there are moments when these voices take on a different tone, casting doubt and negativity. You might hear thoughts like, “Who do you think you are?” or “You’re not enough.” These critical inner dialogues can be disheartening and may even hold us back from reaching our full potential.

In coaching, we refer to the supportive voice that recognizes our strengths and encourages us as the Inner Leader or Allies. These internal allies are essential for our growth, guiding us to move forward with confidence. Conversely, the voices that bring negativity and self-doubt are known as Saboteurs. Rather than ignoring these saboteurs, it’s crucial to acknowledge their messages. Often, they arise from a place of protection, attempting to shield us from perceived risks or failures.

The key is to listen to what these saboteurs are trying to protect us from and to consider their concerns when making decisions. Sometimes, their input can lead us to refine our choices and address valid fears. If, upon reflection, you realize that their influence isn’t serving you in a particular situation, it’s perfectly okay to acknowledge them and gently inform them that you don’t need their input for now.
In my coaching sessions, I encourage clients to give these internal voices names. Often, they reflect traits of people who are close to us or those we hold dear. By personifying these voices, we can better understand their motivations and impact on our lives. This practice can create distance from the negative narratives and empower us to take control of our internal dialogue.
By recognizing and naming these voices, we can cultivate a healthier relationship with ourselves, allowing our Inner Leader to take charge while understanding the protective instincts of our Saboteurs. Ultimately, this awareness helps us make more intentional decisions and fosters personal growth.
